Lip Augmentation Specialist - Board certified NYC
plastic surgeon, Douglas M. Senderoff, MD, FACS offers a variety
of methods to enhance and improve the appearance of the lips.
Lip enhancement can be performed as a simple outpatient
procedure under local anesthesia in either the Plastic Srugeon;s
Manhattan, New York or Westchester offices.
Lip augmentation can rejuvenate the face and create a more
youthful and vibrant appearance as well as a more attractive and
sexy one. As people age the lips gradually lose volume and
appear to shrink over time. Some patients simply have thin lips
and desire a more full appearance. Lip volume can be restored by
using an injectable filler such as Juvederm, Restylane or
Perlane which are all composed of Hyaluronic Acid, a substance
commonly found in the skin. These fillers can be injected under
local anesthesia or after application of topical lidocaine to
the lips. There is no allergy testing required for this class of
fillers as required with Collagen based products. After the lips
have been injected they will be tender and swollen for a few
days. Bruising may also occur. Arnica cream and ice are helpful
in reducing the swelling and bruising.
Lip enhancement usually lasts 4-6 months depending on the
patient and which product is used. Collagen injections which
were popular in the past do not last as long as today’s
products. There are no permanent injectable lip fillers
available in the United States. Silicone lip injections are not
FDA approved and while they are permanent there is a risk of
lumpiness and granuloma formation years later. The complications
of silicone lip injections can sometimes be treated with
cortisone injections or in severe cases removal of the nodules.
Dr. Senderoff has extensive experience in helping patients who
have undergone silicone lip injections and require correction.
There are several surgical options available for lip enhancement
including V-Y advancement of the mucosa of the undersurface of
the lips. This procedure involves advancing the mucous membrane
of the inner lips outward in order to create fullness or fill in
a part of the lip that may be deficient.
Lip reduction can be performed for patients who have lips with
too much lip projection. This condition usually results in an
outward rolling of the bottom lip. In these patients a thin
strip of excess mucosa can be removed under local anesthesia.
The suture line can be hidden on the inside of the lip.
Many patients have lips that are asymmetrical either from birth
or as a result of trauma, burns, or previous procedures. Lip
reconstruction can be performed in many cases under local
anesthesia in the office. By rearranging the patients own lip
tissue the unsightly defects and scars can be corrected.
Patients who are interested in improving the appearance of their
lips are invited to schedule a complimentary consultation with
the NYC Plastic Surgeon. Before and after photos are available
to review.
